To the creative pen Poet Of The Month Competition
( July ) 2009

For Your Poem Entry - To Light A Smile

To Light a Smile

There is something
So satisfying, when,
We reach beyond ourselves;
And through a word,
Or an act,
We cause someone to smile.

And even sweeter still
Just before the change,

As we glance,
We catch a glistened cheek,
Scowl,
E'en downcast look,
Shadowing their face;

And as we watch,
Their head lifts,
Their chin juts out,
Their cheeks rise;
Colour returns,
We may even hear
a soft sigh;

The corners of their mouth soften;
And as the gift we sent their way
Begins their soul to fill,
A smile begins,
Telling us, that,
Through our giving,
The heartache of someone
is now stilled.

I think this is one of life's
Most joyous acts to partake;
A circle of giving that never ends,
Out, in, around and again.

But for me,
The ultimate experience in this kind of act,
Is to see the one whose receiving
Realize they've been given a gift,
Yet secrecy remains;
They don't need my name.

It's enough
to
light
a
smile.
