For Your Poem Entry -
"From Papa With Love"
Nandita,
our outstanding offspring, our dear descendent,
our cherished treasure, our ultimate labour of love
the fragrant flower of our family tree,
you are indeed a scarlet rose
blossomed from our flesh and blood!
I still remember, the first time I held you –
close to my heart,
and you went on sucking your tiny thumb.
That blissful moment when you held
my finger in your petite pink fist.
Our ‘bundle of joy’ cozy like a kitten in my lap,
gazing me with love in your enchanting eyes.
Your angel-like face glowed when I smiled at you.
How you slept serenely in the sandalwood crib
when your mother sung love-drenched lullabies
to ferry you across your own dream-world.
Your first steps, when you walked straight into my arms!
The first sugary word you uttered was “Papa”
and I rewarded you with a tender kiss
on your chubby cherub cheeks
Your first day at the school
just seems to be yesterday,
Dressed smartly in your crisp-white uniform
armed with your shoulder-strapped school bag
you spread the incense of innocence
wherever you went…
Childhood years flew swiftly on the wings of time
and how soon you grew to be a fine young lady.
We realized only when we saw you
draped in a black silk robe, at your graduation ceremony!
How you made us proud
when your teachers and your friends in crowd
drowned our joyful tears in their thundering applause!
We wanted you to be our little girl forever
so we tried to freeze time in our tearful pools
Alas, time never froze…
but we still bask in the enchanting echoes of your girlish giggles
while faint fragrance of your baby powder still lingers in our bed
where you hugged the teddy bear all night!
My eyes are moist and heart is heavy
as I think of that auspicious day of festoons,
when I shall happily (???) give away
your henna-painted hand, in holy matrimony…
So, we have preserved the memories of your pink yesterdays
in a photo-frame of golden tomorrows
and we dedicate this pearl-dusted poem to
God-gifted bounty from heavens above -
Our darling daughter, Nandita,
we wish you love and blessings
for a glittering life ahead…
